Adopt the goal of reducing US greenhouse gas emissions by about 2% a year

Scientific consensus holds that greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels are causing Earth's temperature to rise, leading to more extreme weather, rising sea levels, and other serious impacts. The US is among the largest emitters. Proposals to reduce emissions include regulations on power plants, carbon pricing, and clean energy incentives, which would reduce emissions but could increase energy costs.

Arguments For & Against

Pro Argument

Climate change poses serious risks to future generations. The scientific evidence is overwhelming. We have a moral obligation to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. The costs of inaction—more extreme weather, rising seas, crop failures, and displacement of millions—far exceed the costs of acting now.

Con Argument

Unilateral US action will only hurt American businesses and workers while major emitters like China continue to increase emissions. We should not disadvantage American industry unless other major economies make equivalent binding commitments.
